Snow Transforms into Works of Art
Blocks of snow begin to transform into works of art today at the 35th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition, which takes place at Sinnissippi Park, 1375 N. Second St., Rockford, IL, beginning Wednesday, January 27, 2021, through Saturday, January 30, 2021. Nine teams from Illinois will compete for the right to advance to the 2021 U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Competition in Lake Geneva, WI.  One exhibition team (the winner of last year’s Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition, and competing in this year’s U.S. Nationals in Lake Geneva) will also carve a sculpture. Eight area high school teams will participate in the High School Division and will sculpt from Thursday, January 28, 2021, through Saturday, January 30, 2021.

The Rockford Park District hosts the free, family-friendly winter tradition every year, weather permitting. “We did have to make some changes this year due to the pandemic, but thankfully, this competition takes place outdoors, teams have plenty of space between them, and competitors have lots of layers of protection on in order to stay warm.  We know our community needs this positive experience now more than ever, and with proper health and safety steps in place, we are glad these one-of-a-kind masterpieces will be created for all to enjoy.  Even with all the excitement this week, our hearts are heavy this year, as it’s the first year the competition is going on without our team member, competition coordinator, alderman, and major snow lover, John Beck. The exhibition team Cave People from Space will be creating a special tribute to honor John and the love he had not only for the competition but the entire community,” said Kellie Olivencia, Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Coordinator.
